Growing only from the rich, auburn soils of a small region in South America, Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is an evergreen tree that grows lush thick leaves with truly magical properties. The local indigenous Guaraní populations have celebrated the wonderful tree for thousands of years, believing it to provide the power of the jungle and using it as a basis for essential medicinal and ritualistic traditions.
Yerba maté remained incredibly popular in these regions and is even considered a national drink in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Most locals wouldn’t dream of leaving the house without their favourite cup and a flask of hot or cold water for topping up. It is a bare essential enjoyed all throughout the day, in the morning instead of coffee, in the afternoon as a digestif and any time as a way of coming together with colleagues, family and friends.
The harvesting and preparation of the beloved Yerba maté has been brought to perfection. The leaves and stems of yerba maté are harvested, dried and left to ferment for at least a year. Finally they’re cut into small pieces and similarly to tea are used to create the base of an infusion, which can be either hot or cold.
An infusion that can in modern times still be seen as magical. The naturally high levels of caffeine as well as theobromine and theophylline work together to provide a sustained, slow release of energy that provides a comfortable alternss, but unlike coffee it doesn’t cause jitters, nervousness or subsequent crashing. It also increases motivation, concentration and productivity, while preventing mental & physical fatigue. High levels of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins also contribute to increased overall immune health, accelerated metabolism and the feeling of satiety.
